    New Insights of Background Estimation and Region Localization

    Subtraction of background in a crowded scene is a crucial and challenging task of monitoring the surveillance systems. Because of the similarity between the foreground object and the background, it is known that the background detection and moving foreground objects is difficult. Most of the previous works emphasize this field but they cannot distinguish the foreground from background due to the challenges of gradual or sudden illumination changes, high-frequencies background objects of motion changes, background geometry changes and noise. After getting the foreground objects, segmentation is need to localize the objects region. Image segmentation is a useful tool in many areas, such as object recognition, image processing, medical image analysis, 3D reconstruction, etc. In order to provide a reliable foreground image, a carefully estimated background model is needed. To tackle the issues of illumination changes and motion changes, this paper establishes an effective new insight of background subtraction and segmentation that accurately detect and segment the foreground people. The scene background is investigates by a new insight, namely Mean Subtraction Background Estimation (MS), which identifies and modifies the pixels extracted from the difference of the background and the current frame. Unlike other works, the first frame is calculated by MS instead of taking the first frame as an initial background. Then, this paper make the foreground segmentation in the noisy scene by foreground detection and then localize these detected areas by analyzing various segmentation methods. Calculation experiments on the challenging public crowd counting dataset achieve the best accuracy than state-of-the-art results. This indicates the effectiveness of the proposed work

    Modeling the effect of neighborhood competition on tree diameter growth in the Pacific Northwest Coast Range

    Trees compete for various resources such as sunlight, water, and nutrients, which can be expressed as numerical terms, called competition indices (CI). Competition between individual trees is correlated with their growth and mortality. Therefore, CIs are used as independent variables to develop, improve and modify growth and yield models. This study was conducted to test the effect of neighborhood competition on tree diameter growth among Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg) and red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.), in the Pacific Northwest Coast Range, USA. After testing seven distance-independent CIs and three distance-dependent CIs, only the distance-independent CIs were found to significantly affect the diameter growth model. Among them, CIs with basal area and diameter information were the most impactful. As a result, a simple CI was very effective in a model that accounts for the basal area information of different tree species

    Association of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T polymorphism and serum lipid levels in the Guangxi Bai Ku Yao and Han populations

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The association of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene polymorphism and serum lipid profiles is still controversial in diverse ethnics. Bai Ku Yao is an isolated subgroup of the Yao minority in China. The aim of the present study was to eveluate the association of MTHFR C677T polymorphism and several environmental factors with serum lipid levels in the Guangxi Bai Ku Yao and Han populations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 780 subjects of Bai Ku Yao and 686 participants of Han Chinese were randomly selected from our previous stratified randomized cluster samples. Genotyping of the MTHFR C677T was performed by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism combined with gel electrophoresis, and then confirmed by direct sequencing.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein (Apo) AI and ApoB were lower in Bai Ku Yao than in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.05-0.001). The frequency of C and T alleles was 77.4% and 22.6% in Bai Ku Yao, and 60.9% and 39.1% in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.001); respectively. The frequency of CC, CT and TT genotypes was 58.7%, 37.3% and 4.0% in Bai Ku Yao, and 32.6%, 56.4% and 11.0% in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.001); respectively. The levels of TC and LDL-C in both ethnic groups were significant differences among the three genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.05-0.01). The T allele carriers had higher serum TC and LDL-C levels than the T allele noncarriers. The levels of ApoB in Han were significant differences among the three genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.05). The T allele carriers had higher serum ApoB levels as compared with the T allele noncarriers. The levels of TC, TG and LDL-C in Bai Ku Yao were correlated with genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.05-0.001), whereas the levels of LDL-C in Han were associated with genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.001). Serum lipid parameters were also correlated with sex, age, body mass index, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, and blood pressure in the both ethnic groups.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The differences in serum TC, TG, LDL-C and ApoB levels between the two ethnic groups might partly result from different genotypic and allelic frequencies of the MTHFR C677T or different MTHFR gene-enviromental interactions.</p

    Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta +294T > C polymorphism and serum lipid levels in the Guangxi Bai Ku Yao and Han populations

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The association of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta (PPARD) +294T > C polymorphism and serum lipid levels is inconsistent in several previous studies. Bai Ku Yao is an isolated subgroup of the Yao minority in China. The present study was undertaken to detect the association of PPARD +294T > C (rs2016520) polymorphism and several environmental factors with serum lipid levels in the Guangxi Bai Ku Yao and Han populations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 609 subjects of Bai Ku Yao and 573 participants of Han Chinese were randomly selected from our previous stratified randomized cluster samples. Genotyping of the PPARD +294T > C polymorphism was performed by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism combined with gel electrophoresis, and then confirmed by direct sequencing.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), apolipoprotein (Apo) AI and ApoB were lower in Bai Ku Yao than in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.001 for all). The frequency of T and C alleles was 77.50% and 22.50% in Bai Ku Yao, and 72.43% and 27.57% in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.01); respectively. The frequency of TT, TC and CC genotypes was 60.59%, 33.83% and 5.53% in Bai Ku Yao, and 52.18%, 40.50% and 7.32% in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.05); respectively. The subjects with CC genotype in Bai Ku Yao had higher serum LDL-C and ApoB levels and lower the ratio of ApoAI to ApoB than the subjects with TT and TC genotypes in females but not in males. The C allele carriers in Han had higher serum TC levels in males (<it>P </it>< 0.01) and ApoB levels in females (<it>P </it>< 0.05) than the C allele noncarriers. Serum TC and ApoB levels were correlated with genotypes in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.05 for each) but not in Bai Ku Yao. Serum lipid parameters were also correlated with sex, age, body mass index, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, and blood pressure in both ethnic groups.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results suggest that the association of PPARD +294T > C polymorphism and serum lipid levels is different between the Bai Ku Yao and Han populations.     Interactions of Several Lipid-Related Gene Polymorphisms and Cigarette Smoking on Blood Pressure Levels

    The interactions of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and cigarette smoking on blood pressure levels are limited. The present study was undertaken to detect nine lipid-related SNPs and their interactions with cigarette smoking on blood pressure levels. Genotyping of ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA-1) V825I, acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase-1 (ACAT-1) rs1044925, low density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) AvaⅡ, hepatic lipase gene (LIPC) -250G>A, endothelial lipase gene (LIPG) 584C>T, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677C>T, proprotein convertase subtilisin-like kexin type 9 (PCSK9) E670G, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta (PPARD) +294T>C, and Scavenger receptor class B type 1 (SCARB1) rs5888 was performed in 935 nonsmokers and 845 smokers. The interactions were detected by factorial regression analysis. The frequencies of genotypes (ACAT-1 and LIPG), alleles (ABCA-1), and both genotypes and alleles (LDL-R, LIPC, PPARD and SCARB1) were different between nonsmokers and smokers (P < 0.05-0.001). The levels of pulse pressure (PP, ABCA-1), and systolic, diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP) and PP (LIPC) in nonsmokers were different among the genotypes (P < 0.01-0.001). The levels of SBP (ABCA-1, ACAT-1, LIPG and PCSK9), DBP (ACAT-1, LDL-R, LIPC, PCSK9 and PPARD), and PP (LIPC, LIPG, MTHFR and PCSK9) in smokers were different among the genotypes (P < 0.01-0.001). The SNPs of ABCA-1, ACAT-1 and PCSK9; ACAT-1, LDL-R, MTHFR and PCSK9; and ABCA-1, LIPC, PCSK9 and PPARD were shown interactions with cigarette smoking to influence SBP, DBP and PP levels (P < 0.05-0.001); respectively. The differences in blood pressure levels between the nonsmokers and smokers might partly result from different interactions of several SNPs and cigarette smoking

    The goal of this project is to modify a Honda GX35 engine to improve its fuel efficiency and maximize its competitiveness in the Shell Eco-marathon competitions. This competition has tight restrictions on the type of fuel used to power the engine, but otherwise has very few rules limiting the type of modifications which may be made. Our primary goals are to maximize volumetric efficiency and maintain an efficient operating temperature. Future work might pursue more advanced technologies such as pseudo-atkinson cycle operation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The association of UDP-N-acetyl-alpha-D-galactosamine: polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 2 gene (<it>GALNT2</it>) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and serum lipid profiles in the general population is not well known. The present study was undertaken to detect the association of <it>GALNT2 </it>polymorphisms and several environmental factors with serum lipid levels in the Guangxi Mulao and Han populations.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>A total of 775 subjects of Mulao nationality and 699 participants of Han nationality were randomly selected from our stratified randomized cluster samples. Genotyping of the <it>GALNT2 </it>rs2144300 and rs4846914 SNPs was performed by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism combined with gel electrophoresis, and then confirmed by direct sequencing.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were no significant differences in the genotypic and allelic frequencies of both SNPs between the two ethnic groups, or between the males and females. The subjects with TT genotype of rs2144300 in Mulao had lower serum triglyceride (TG) levels than the subjects with CC genotype in females (<it>P </it>< 0.01). The participants with CT/TT genotype of rs2144300 in Han had lower TG and apolipoprotein (Apo) B levels, and higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), ApoA1 levels and the ratio of ApoA1 to ApoB in males; and higher low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and ApoB levels in females than the participants with CC genotype (<it>P </it>< 0.05-0.001). The individuals with GA/AA genotype of rs4846914 in Mulao had higher total cholesterol (TC) and LDL-C levels than the individuals with GG genotype in males (<it>P </it>< 0.05 for each). The subjects with AA genotype of rs4846914 in Han had higher LDL-C and ApoB levels, and lower HDL-C levels and the ratio of ApoA1 to ApoB than the subjects with GG genotype (<it>P </it>< 0.05 for each). The levels of TC in Mulao were correlated with the genotypes of rs4846914 in males (<it>P </it>< 0.05). The levels of ApoA1 in Han were correlated with the genotypes of both SNPs, and the levels of HDL-C and ApoB and the ratio of ApoA1 to ApoB were associated with the genotypes of rs2144300 in males (<it>P </it>< 0.05-0.001). The levels of LDL-C in Han were correlated with the genotypes of rs4846914 in females (<it>P </it>< 0.05). Serum lipid parameters were also correlated with several enviromental factors.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The associations of both <it>GALNT2 </it>rs2144300 and rs4846914 SNPs and serum lipid levels are different in the Mulao and Han populations. These discrepancies might partly result from different <it>GALNT2 </it>gene-enviromental interactions.</p

    Low density lipoprotein receptor gene Ava II polymorphism and serum lipid levels in the Guangxi Bai Ku Yao and Han populations

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Several common genetic polymorphisms in the low density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) gene have associated with modifications of serum total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, but the results are not consistent in different populations. Bai Ku Yao is a special subgroup of the Yao minority in China. The present study was undertaken to detect the association of LDL-R gene <it>Ava </it>Ⅱ polymorphism and serum lipid levels in the Guangxi Bai Ku Yao and Han populations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 1024 subjects of Bai Ku Yao and 792 participants of Han Chinese were randomly selected from our previous stratified randomized cluster samples. Genotyping of the LDL-R gene <it>Ava </it>Ⅱ polymorphism was performed by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism combined with gel electrophoresis, and then confirmed by direct sequencing.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The levels of serum TC, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL-C, apolipoprotein (Apo) A1 and the ratio of ApoA1 to ApoB were lower in Bai Ku Yao than in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.01 for all). The frequency of A<sup>- </sup>and A<sup>+ </sup>alleles was 65.5% and 34.5% in Bai Ku Yao, and 80.7% and 19.3% in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.001); respectively. The frequency of A<sup>-</sup>A<sup>-</sup>, A<sup>-</sup>A<sup>+ </sup>and A<sup>+</sup>A<sup>+ </sup>genotypes was 42.6%, 45.9% and 11.5% in Bai Ku Yao, and 64.9%, 31.6% and 3.5% in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.001); respectively. There was also significant difference in the genotypic frequencies between males and females in Bai Ku Yao (<it>P </it><0.05), and in the genotypic and allelic frequencies between normal LDL-C (≤ 3.20 mmol/L) and high LDL-C (>3.20 mmol/L) subgroups in Bai Ku Yao (<it>P </it>< 0.05 for each) and between males and females in Han (<it>P </it>< 0.05 for each). The levels of LDL-C in males and TC and HDL-C in females were different among the three genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.05 for all) in Bai Ku Yao, whereas the levels of HDL-C in males and HDL-C and ApoA1 in females were different among the three genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.05-0.001) in Han. The subjects with A<sup>+</sup>A<sup>+ </sup>genotype had higher serum LDL-C, TC, HDL-C or ApoA1 levels than the subjects with A<sup>-</sup>A<sup>+ </sup>and A<sup>-</sup>A<sup>- </sup>genotypes. Spearman rank correlation analysis revealed that the levels of LDL-C in Bai Ku Yao and HDL-C in Han were correlated with genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.05 and <it>P </it>< 0.01; respectively).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The association of LDL-R gene <it>Ava </it>Ⅱ polymorphism and serum lipid levels is different between the Bai Ku Yao and Han populations. The discrepancy might partly result from different LDL-R gene <it>Ava </it>Ⅱ polymorphism or LDL-R gene-enviromental interactions.</p

    Chlorhexidine and octenidine use, qac genes carriage, and reduced antiseptic susceptibility in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates from a healthcare network

    Funding: This research was supported by the Small Innovative Grant (SIG/15033) and Communicable Diseases – Public Health Research Grant (CDPHRG/0008/2014) awarded by the National Healthcare Group and Ministry of Health Singapore respectively.Objectives With the widespread use of antiseptics in healthcare facilities for the prevention of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) transmission, there are concerns for antiseptic tolerance and resistance. We sought to understand the use of chlorhexidine and octenidine, qac genes carriage and reduced antiseptic susceptibilities. Methods A serial cross-sectional study was conducted in an acute care hospital and three extended-care facilities of a healthcare network in June-July, 2014-2016. Two of the extended-care facilities were exposed to intranasal octenidine and universal daily chlorhexidine/octenidine bathing. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) levels and qac genes were determined by broth microdilution tests and whole genome sequencing respectively. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess for the independent associations between antiseptic exposures, qac genes and reduced antiseptic susceptibilities. Results A total of 878 MRSA isolates were obtained. There were associations between qacA/B carriage and chlorhexidine (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 7.80; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.25-18.71) and octenidine (aOR: 11.79; 95%CI: 5.14-27.04) exposures. Chlorhexidine exposure was associated with reduced chlorhexidine susceptibility (MIC≥4mg/L) (aOR: 3.15; 95%CI: 1.14-8.74). Carriage of qacA/B (aOR: 10.65: 95%CI: 4.14-27.40) or qacC (aOR: 2.55; 95%CI: 1.22-5.32) had an association with reduced chlorhexidine susceptibility; while MRSA sequence type modified the association. However, we found no direct association between (i) antiseptics use and qacC carriage, (ii) octenidine exposure and reduced susceptibility and (iii) reduced octenidine susceptibility and qacA/B or qacC carriage. Conclusions Antiseptic exposures were associated with qac genes carriage. Chlorhexidine exposure was associated with reduced chlorhexidine susceptibility, requiring continued surveillance for the emergence of resistance.PostprintPeer reviewe
